From the WTF Watch Desk: Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service reported that 62 of 89 people who died in house fires from 2015 through 2025 lived alone; smoking materials were associated with 38 deaths, wiring and plugs with 15, and heaters or open fires with nine.
Why this deserves the fire service’s attention
Community risk reduction must identify who is least able to detect, escape or recover from a fire—not just which ignition sources appear most often.
