From the WTF Watch Desk: Federal wildland fire officials identified Randy Lupe, 62, of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, as the support crewmember who died following a medical emergency on the Frijoles Fire on Sunday, August 23.
Lupe was a temporary emergency support crewmember assigned to the San Carlos camp crew. The crew was supporting federal wildfire response in northern New Mexico. Officials did not release additional medical information out of respect for his family.
At the time of the announcement, the Frijoles Fire was estimated above 15,200 acres and 46 percent contained under an interagency complex incident management team.
Why this deserves the fire service’s attention
The wildland workforce is larger than the personnel holding line. Camp crews, drivers, food-service workers, supply personnel, communications staff, mechanics and other support roles keep the incident functioning through long operational periods.
Health surveillance, acclimatization, rest, medical access and post-incident support must include that entire workforce. A job title does not determine whether heat, altitude, fatigue, smoke and extended deployment can cause harm.

Federal officials publicly identified Lupe, acknowledged the essential role of support personnel and stated that family and coworker support was being facilitated.
