From the WTF Watch Desk: Three apparatus collisions in three cities reinforce that roadway risk exists during emergency response and after crews establish an operating scene.

In the Bronx, an FDNY apparatus and an MTA bus collided, sending five firefighters and 14 civilians to hospitals; three additional people were evaluated. In Chicago, a pickup reportedly struck a fire apparatus operating with emergency lights, hospitalizing four apparatus occupants. Police cited the pickup driver for allegedly failing to yield.

In Kentucky, Upton Fire Department reported that an apparatus positioned as a blocker on I-65 was struck for the second time since May. No one was injured in the latest collision.

The incidents should not be forced into a single fault narrative before official reviews are complete. Their shared training value is broader: intersections demand disciplined clearing, and highway scenes demand apparatus placement that assumes another driver will enter the work zone.

Why this deserves the fire service’s attention

Emergency warning devices request the right of way; they do not physically create it. EVOC practice should make a complete stop or controlled intersection-clearance process observable and repeatable under stress.

Once on scene, a blocker is intentionally exposed to absorb a secondary impact before it reaches people working outside vehicles. That protective choice must be supported with upstream warning, advance positioning, crew dismount discipline and a plan for replacing the blocker if it is hit.
